MSCE Biology for Form 4: Master Key Concepts

Aim: To measure and compare the breathing rate before and after physical activity.

Materials:

  • Stopwatch or timer
  • Chair or seat
  • A quiet area for resting
  • A space for running in place (e.g., a clear floor space)

Procedure:

  1. Resting Measurement:
    • Sit comfortably in a chair or on a seat in a quiet area.
    • Ensure the individual is at rest and calm for at least 5 minutes.
    • Use the stopwatch to measure the number of breaths (inhalation and exhalation) for one minute.
    • Record the number of breaths as the resting breathing rate.
  2. Physical Activity:
    • Have the individual run in place for 5 minutes.
    • Ensure the activity is at a moderate pace.
  3. Post-Exercise Measurement:
    • Immediately after running, sit the individual back in the chair or seat.
    • Allow them to rest and recover for at least 1 minute.
    • Measure the number of breaths (inhalation and exhalation) for one minute using the stopwatch.
    • Record the number of breaths as the post-exercise breathing rate.
  4. Comparison:
    • Compare the number of breaths per minute recorded during the resting state with the number recorded after running.

Observations:

  • The breathing rate should be lower during the resting phase and higher immediately after physical activity.

Conclusion:

  • The experiment will show an increase in breathing rate after exercise compared to the resting state, demonstrating the body’s response to increased demand for oxygen.
