Definition
A conjunction is a word that connects words, phrases, or clauses, helping to build complex sentences and show the relationship between ideas.
Types of Conjunctions with Examples
- Coordinating Conjunctions: Connect words, phrases, or independent clauses of equal rank.
Examples: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so (often remembered by the acronym FANBOYS)- She likes tea and coffee.
- He wanted to go, but he was tired.
- Subordinating Conjunctions: Introduce dependent (subordinate) clauses and show relationships like cause, time, condition, contrast.
Examples: because, although, since, if, when, while, unless, after, before- I stayed home because I was sick.
- Although it rained, we went hiking.
- Correlative Conjunctions: Paired conjunctions that work together.
Examples: either…or, neither…nor, both…and, not only…but also- Either you come or I will go alone.
- Both the teacher and the students were excited.
