Disease and Parasite Control in Sheep

Pneumonia

  • Caused by bacteria or viruses.

  • Symptoms: loss of appetite, coughing, breathing problems, nasal discharge.

  • Treat with antibiotics.

  • Prevent by keeping animals in a clean, warm, and well-ventilated house.

  • Give them clean water and good feed.

Pulpy Kidney (Lamb Dysentery)

  • Caused by bacteria.

  • Symptoms: staring eyes, tiredness, bloody diarrhoea, convulsions, sudden death.

  • Control with vaccination.

Heartwater

  • Caused by protozoa spread by ticks.

  • Symptoms: loss of appetite, high fever, nervousness, walking in circles, high death in exotic breeds.

  • Treat early with tetracycline.

  • Control by dipping the animals.

Brucellosis (Contagious Abortion)

  • Caused by bacteria.

  • Symptoms: infection of the uterus, abortion, dead foetus.

  • Slaughter and burn infected animals.

  • Control by vaccinating healthy ones.

Foot Rot

  • Caused by fungi and bacteria.

  • Symptoms: swollen feet, pus, bad smell, lameness.

  • Treat with antibiotics, disinfectants, and trimming hooves.

Foot and Mouth Disease

  • Caused by a virus.

  • Symptoms: high fever, dullness, too much saliva, lameness.

  • Control by vaccination, movement restriction, and slaughter of infected animals.

Mastitis

  • Caused by bacteria.

  • Symptoms: swollen udder, blood and pus in milk.

  • Treat with antibiotics.

  • Prevent with clean milking, disinfectants, and vaccination.

Sheep Pox

  • Caused by a virus.

  • Symptoms: high fever, red pimples, death in young lambs.

  • There is no treatment.

  • Use preventive measures to protect the flock.
