1. Explain the terms “weather” and “climate”

Q: What is weather?
A:

  • Weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a specific place and time.

  • It changes daily or even hourly.

  • It includes rain, sunshine, wind, clouds, temperature, etc.

Examples:

  • It is rainy today.

  • It was hot yesterday but cold this morning.

Q: What is climate?
A:

  • Climate is the average weather conditions of a place over a long period of time (about 30 years or more).

  • It tells us what kind of weather a place usually has.

Examples:

  • Malawi has a tropical climate (hot and wet in summer, cool and dry in winter).

  • The Sahara has a desert climate (hot and dry most of the year).
