KENYA’S INDEPENDENCE

General elections were held in 1963.

The Kenya African National Union (KANU) won, and Jomo Kenyatta became Prime Minister.

Kenya gained independence from British colonial rule on 12th December 1963.

In 1964, Kenya became a republic, with Kenyatta as President and Oginga Odinga as Vice President.

Kenyatta promoted national unity and self-reliance through his philosophy of Harambee (“Let’s work together”).
