REASONS FOR INDIA’S PARTITION
- Growing conflict between Hindus and Muslims.
- Muslims wanted an Islamic state, fearing Hindu domination.
- British feared a civil war due to Hindu-Muslim violence.
ACTUAL PARTITION
- India became a Hindu-majority country under Jawaharlal Nehru.
- Pakistan had two parts: West Pakistan and East Pakistan with Jinnah as leader.
- Kashmir was semi-independent and undecided on joining either country.
PARTITION OF PAKISTAN (1971)
- East and West Pakistan were separated by India.
- East Pakistan felt neglected and underdeveloped.
- Ethnic and political tensions increased.
- East Pakistan became Bangladesh in 1971 under Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
- West Pakistan remained as Pakistan under Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
PARTITION OF KASHMIR
- Kashmir was a Muslim-majority region ruled by a Hindu prince.
- In 1947, Muslim tribes invaded Kashmir to join it with Pakistan.
- The prince asked India for help, causing war.
- Kashmir was divided:
- North Kashmir under Pakistan.
South Kashmir under India.
