- The Defeat of Germany
On June 6, 1944, the Allied forces launched Operation Overlord, also known as D-Day, landing in Normandy, France, under the command of General Eisenhower. This led to the liberation of France, Belgium, and Holland. The Allies advanced from the West while Russian forces approached from the East. Faced with inevitable defeat, Hitler committed suicide on April 30, 1945, and Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945, celebrated as Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
- The Defeat of Japan
Japan employed suicide attacks through Kamikaze planes. To end the war swiftly and reduce costs, the Allies used nuclear weapons. The first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and the second on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. Despite initial resistance, Japan surrendered unconditionally on August 15, 1945, following Emperor Hirohito’s announcement.
