Distinguish Large Scale and Small Scale Maps

  • Large scale maps show small areas with a lot of detail (e.g., 1:10,000).

  • Small scale maps show large areas with less detail (e.g., 1:1,000,000).

10. Explain Compass Points and Cardinal Points

  • Cardinal points: North (N), East (E), South (S), West (W) — main directions on a compass.

Used to describe direction and location on a map or in the environment.

Explain True North, Magnetic North, and Grid North

  • True North: The direction towards the geographic North Pole.

  • Magnetic North: The direction a compass points, towards the magnetic pole (not exactly the same as True North).

Grid North: The direction of north shown by the vertical grid lines on a map.
