  • Symbols represent features such as roads, schools, rivers, forests, towns, and churches.

  • Conventional signs are standard symbols used worldwide or locally.

  • Examples:

    • A blue line = river

    • A black line = road

    • A triangle = mountain peak
    • A small square = school

Interpreting Maps Using Signs and Symbols

  • Identify features by their symbols using the map key.

  • Measure distances on maps:

    • Straight distance using a ruler or string.

    • Winding distance by following curves with a piece of string.

  • Draw sketch maps and diagrams to scale using symbols.
