Applications of Uniform Circular Motion
- Car Negotiating a Corner:
- Forces:
- Normal Contact Force NNN: Balances the weight (mg) of the car.
- Static Friction Force Fs: Provides the centripetal force needed for circular motion.
- If friction is insufficient, the car may skid.
- Car Cornering on a Banked Road:
- The normal force provides the centripetal force without relying on friction.
- Aircraft Banking:
- The vertical component of the lift force (LLL) balances the weight, while the horizontal component provides the centripetal force.
- Planets in Orbit:
- Planets are kept in orbit by the gravitational force between them and the body they orbit around.
- Cornering:
- Roads are often banked (raised towards the outside) to help vehicles maintain stability while cornering.
- Spin Dryer:
- The drum spins rapidly to dry clothes by forcing water out through centrifugal force.
- Centrifuge:
- Used for separating mixtures of liquids (e.g., separating palm oil from water) and for studying forces experienced by astronauts.
