TYPES AND FUNCTIONS
OF WHITE BLOOD CELLS
White blood cells (scientific name leukocytes), also called immune cells or immunocytes.
White Blood Cells (WBCs)
Granulocytes
WBCs with granules in their cytoplasm
Neutrophil
Engulf and destroy bacteria and fungi through phagocytosis.
Eosinophil
Attack and destroy parasites; involved in allergic reactions by releasing inflammatory mediators.
Basophil
Release histamine during allergic reactions to enhance blood flow and recruit other immune cells.
Agranulocytes
WBCs with no distinct granules in their cytoplasm
Lymphocytes
Monocytes
B-Lymphocytes
Produce antibodies to target specific pathogens.
T-Lymphocytes
Destroy infected cells and coordinate the immune response.
Natural Killer Cells
Attack virus-infected cells and cancer cells.
Monocytes: Transform into macrophages or dendritic cells to remove debris, dead cells, and pathogens, and help activate other immune cells.
